Former President Bill Clinton defended Joe Biden's dismal poll ratings on Monday, insisting his successor in the White House was motivated less by popularity than getting the job done.

The chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan, an immigration crisis and spiraling inflation have sent Biden's approval ratings into freefall.

The result is a Democratic Party fearing the worst in November's midterm elections.

But Clinton offered a rosier view, claiming the president ad delivered on his campaign promise to turn the corner on the COVID-19 pandemic and restore the U.S. to its rightful place in the world.

'In his first 16 months in office, Joe Biden has done exactly what he said he would do if elected—help America overcome an unprecedented pandemic, rebuild a battered economy from the bottom up and middle out so that it works for all of us, and restore our standing in the world,' he wrote in a piece for Time's '100 Most Influential People of 2022.'

After celebrating how 575 million COVD-19 vaccinations had been delivered and 8.3 million jobs created, he turns his attention to the factors that are weighing down Biden in the polls.

'We still face stern tasks, including taming inflation without causing a recession, and combatting violent crime,' he added.

'The usual sound bites and answers that dominate the news won't help.

'But a get-the-job-done leader who cares more about the people than the polls, more about winning the future than rewriting history, will.

'That's who Joe Biden is. And why I'm glad he’s on the job.'

That sentiment puts Clinton very much in a minority of Americans.

A NewsNation/Decision Desk HQ poll published Monday found that 57 percent of registered voters disapproved of Biden's performance, compared with only 42 percent who approved.

Of those, some 40 percent said they 'strongly disapproved.'

They mark Biden's lowest standing since NewsNation launched its poll, and his disapproval rating has grown from 53 percent last month.

The results are in line with other recent surveys.

He ended his first year underwater, with an average approval rating of about 48 percent - higher than Donald Trump, but
