Deadly asbestos is delaying Oxford University's first new college in nearly three decades as workers are forbidden from the site until it's safely removed.

The project to launch the new college, called Reuben, began in April 2020 and was expected to be ready by now.

But Morgan Sindall Construction, who are carrying out the works, found that the former science library they are converting had large amounts of asbestos in the wall plaster.

The new college has been designed to include accessible spaces for college life, including quiet study areas and spaces for meetings and special occasions

Plans have been put in place to remove the asbestos without damaging the Grade II historical buildings that will make up the college. The new site will be a postgraduates-only college 'dedicated to interdisciplinary research'
