The sheriff of Los Angeles County has called out the District Attorney saying the police were 'never consulted' in the 'lightweight sentence' handed to a teen who hit a mother and her child while high on drugs.

Alex Villanueva, 59, wrote in a Facebook statement that George Gascon, 68, 'released a statement claiming that the Sheriff's Department was okay with the lightweight sentencing' handed to the now 17-year-old criminal.

'We were never consulted as we were not the investigating agency. Sheriff's Investigators would never be ok with the lightweight sentencing in this hit and run case,' he siad.

'Stop empowering and encouraging criminal behavior. Hold them accountable. #VictimsMatter.'

Gascon - who has been met with severe criticism in the last year as Los Angeles experiences heighten crime, said the sentence was 'an appropriate resolution.'

His office has been accused of being light on crime sentencing and letting criminals back out on the streets.

The teenager was charged to five to seven months in a juvenile probation camp for the August crime. Prosecutors have criticized LA's probation camps, calling them 'less than a military school and a little bit tougher than a summer camp.'

Gascon office said that juvenile justice was intended to 'rehabilitate young people.'

The 17-year-old, who is only known as KB, has pleaded guilty to two felony counts of assault by means of force likely to produce bodily injury and a single felony count of hit-and-run, according to Fox News

The baby was unharmed but the mom suffered from extensive injuries, with some of her skin ripped almost to the bone and glass coming out of her skin for two months.

The teen, only identified as KB, tested positive for drugs during the August accident and the victim, whose only been named as Rachel, said he accelerated at her before running her and her son Charlie over (pictured: post-hit)
