A notorious socialite was detained with $20,000 worth of steroids months before he was charged with trafficking meth, cocaine, and ketamine into Australia.

Anthony Hess, 43, was arrested in Melbourne on Tuesday afternoon as the latest to be snared in a joint Australian Federal Police and Victoria Police operation.

He is accused of attempting to import and possess 4kg each of cocaine and meth, and 1kg of ketamine and faces 25 years in jail if convicted.

But Daily Mail Australia can reveal he was detailed for seven hours by Australian Border Force on January 10 when he landed in Sydney from the US via Canada and quizzed about a notorious former bikie.

He said at the time that his phone and $20,000 worth of of human growth hormone were seized and handed to the AFP.

Hess has a prescription for the steroids, which he has used regularly for the past decade, and he was not accused of any wrongdoing.

'It was so overdramatic, they would not tell me what was going on but they ripped right through everything,' he told Daily Mail Australia days later.

'I had $20,000 of human growth hormone taken because the script was in my phone and they confiscated that phone for five days now. Ridiculous.

'They took me to the shower and searched me naked. I'm just waiting to hear back from [my lawyers].

'They (the ABF officers) we also asking questions about Toby (Mitchell). It was like they were waiting and pounced on me.'

Hess months later wrote to the AFP demanding the return of his phone and steroid supplies as it was costing him $400 an hour in legal fees chasing them.

'I have a script from a doctor in Colombia, however it was on my phone which was permanently confiscated by Border Force,' he wrote.

'I am able to provide letter from multiple specialists to substantiate my claims as I have severe osteoarthritis and the HGH is the only way I can have a normal life.

'Without the HGH, I am completely bedridden and cannot move, I am in so much pain and the only choice of pain relief is drugs that I do not want to take.'

Hess detailed the phone calls he made in an attempt to get his property back and asked if he should 'just give up'.

Attached to the email was a photo of a receipt for goods form the ABF gave him.

The included 300 25mg tablets of stanozolol, two 10ml vials of sustanon, and 300 10mg tablets of oxandrolone - all anabolic steroids.

Hess earlier this year said he was 'living a nightmare' after a 'botched' cosmetic procedure in June 2013 by controversial doctor Danny Lanzer until he finally had the damage repaired in Colombia.

Dr Lanzer when asked about the procedure claimed Hess was initially happy with the surgery but then used steroids to bulk up, which changed his body in a way that caused problems for the procedure.
