A Japanese manufacturer of 'glamorous' lacy boxer shorts which are designed for men was surprised to sell out of its stock.

Underwear company Wacoal which sells the briefs for ¥3,960 (£24) said the garment is 'designed to comfortably wrap around the male part'.

It was worked on by the company's underwear scientists for six months before they shared the news of the new lacy boxers.

Wacoal was at first unsure about the idea so it crowdfunded for an initial target of ¥300,000-worth of orders (£1,800).

But ended up hitting, 1,000% more than that, at ¥3.2 million-worth of orders (£19,000).

The sales craze then reached fever pitch yet again at Japanese department store Isetan in Tokyo.

Its glamorous menswear section sold out of three months-worth of stock in just 10 days due to the boxer's popularity with men in their 30s and 40s, The Times reported.

Looking at Wacoal's website today, it was also not possible to purchase the boxers in any of the seven colours including red, black, pink, yellow and pale blue or in either of the sizes, medium and large.
