The owner of the Majorcan house hit by Cristiano Ronaldo's £1.7 million Bugatti Veyron says the footballer has pledged to pay for the damage.

The unnamed homeowner revealed he was promised compensation after turning up at the Man United striker's rented mansion yesterday to try to speak to him.

He also revealed he feared his pet dog had been killed in the accident just before midday on Monday and said it had been left 'shaking with fear' by the smash.

Police have confirmed an employee of Ronaldo's, thought to have been one of his bodyguards, was driving the sports car when it came off the road and smashed into a stone wall protecting the house.

The accident happened on a minor road near Joan March Hospital in the municipality of Bunyola, close to the luxury rural property with its own football pitch and beach volleyball court Cristiano has rented for a family holiday.

The Bugatti was one of two cars the 37-year-old dad-of-five had ferried over to Majorca for his sunshine break.

Cristiano was reportedly in another vehicle in a small convoy with his loved ones when his employee came off the road after they left their rented home for a day out and is said to have ordered other staff to remain at the scene while they continued their journey.

The badly-damaged Bugatti was later driven away on a tow-truck under a blue tarpaulin.

Speaking to respected island newspaper Ultima Hora, the owner of the house the sports car smashed into said of his trip to Ronaldo's holiday home to find a solution to his problems: 'I had to wait for a while for the door to be opened but I was met by a very polite man and woman.

'On behalf of Ronaldo they promised to pay all the damage the Bugatti had caused.

'They told me to get everything fixed and keep the invoices.'

Saying he would contact his insurance firm in the coming hours, he added: 'My water meter was ripped out in the accident and since then I haven't been able to live normally in my own house.

'The door flew off its hinges and two concrete columns were knocked down.

'I was working when the police told me about the accident and the first thing I thought was that my dog had been killed because it is always behind the door.

'When I entered the property I saw him shaking with fear a fair distance from the entrance.'

It was not immediately clear how much Cristiano will have to shell out for the damage his employee caused.

Cristiano is thought to have been heading to his £5.5 million Azimut Grande superyacht, moored in Porto Adriano in the south-west of Majorca, when the smash happened.

Another Majorcan daily, Cronica Balear, said security staff left to look after the car while they waited for the police to arrive 'had done everything possible to make sure curious locals who recognised the Bugatti as Cristiano's tried to take photos.

The identity of the person at the wheel has not yet been revealed, but it is well-known Cristiano Ronaldo and his family are protected in Cheshire by Portuguese twins who served as soldiers with an elite special forces unit in Afghanistan.

The strongmen have been named as Sergio and Jorge Ramalheiro, who went on to become part of a Portuguese close protection unit tasked with watching over the likes of politicians and judges after serving in Afghanistan.

Portuguese celeb magazine Flash said the twins, part of a set of triplets, had been hired by Cristiano after they asked to go on
