Police and firefighters were met with the huge void which had formed on the residential road - though it's unclear what caused it. Photographs show the size of the hole - which spans the entire width of the road and is said to be more than 16ft deep. A police cordon was initially put up around the damaged section of road and officers remained at the scene to protect members of the public. A Metropolitan Police spokesperson told MailOnline: 'Police were called to Martens Avenue, Bexleyheath, shortly before 21.00hrs on 21 June to reports of a large sinkhole. 'Officers attended and cordons were put in place. There are no reported injuries.' A London Fire Brigade spokesperson added: 'Firefighters were called at 21:06 last night to a sink hole the depth of 5m in the road on Martens Avenue in Bexleyheath.
