Matthew McIlravy, 42, who has served as mayor of Pilot Point, Texas since May, submitted his resignation last Thursday before a city council meeting. He is accused of trying to meet up and engage in sex with a girl he thought was 13 according to an arrest warrant. 'To the Pilot Point City Council and City Manager, I am resigning as mayor of Pilot Point effective immediately,' McIlravy wrote in his resignation letter, WFAA reported. McIlravy, who is a married father of two sons, was charged last week with solicitation of a minor under the age of 14, according to Dallas Morning News. McIlravy was arrested following a five-month undercover operation by the Internet Crimes Against Children Unit of the Dallas police. The effort involved involved multiple agencies, including the U.S. Marshals Task Force, Homeland Security Investigations, Texas Department of Public Safety and Collin County District Attorney’s Office Investigators said he also had 'additional communication with minors' who have not yet been identified and that the investigation is ongoing. It is unclear if McIlravy has obtained an attorney. McIlravy was elected mayor of the Denton County town in May, which has a population of approximately 4,000 residents. After the resignation, Pro Tem Mayor Chad Major announced he would be assuming the responsibilities of mayor according to KDFW-TV. Major also declined to address McIlravy's arrest at the meeting, saying it was 'not the place to address complaints against public officials or staff, and complaints should be submitted to the city manager in writing.'
