Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell accused President Joe Biden of acting 'below the dignity' of his office on Thursday after the commander-in-chief excoriated the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.
The Kentucky lawmaker said Biden was simply 'blame shifting' to turn Americans' attention away from soaring inflation and rising crime.
The president talked about his administration's action plan to protect abortion access during a press conference in Madrid, Spain earlier on Thursday, and whether the dramatic ruling had any effect on the US's world standing.
'America is better positioned to lead the world than we ever have been,' Biden said. 'But one thing that has been destabilizing is the outrageous behavior of the Supreme Court of United States in overruling not only Roe v. Wade, but essentially challenging the right to privacy.'
McConnell warned a few hours later that such criticism was 'dangerous.'
'Attacking a core American institution like the Supreme Court from the world stage is below the dignity of the President. Beyond that, President Biden’s attacks on the Court are unmerited and dangerous,' the Senate Minority Leader said.
'He’s upset that the Court said the people, through their elected representatives, will have a say on abortion policy. That does not destabilize democracy – it affirms it.'
