Google's 'Fourth of July' celebratory tribute page appeared to go horribly wrong on Monday as news of the mass shooting in a northern suburb of Chicago began to filter on through.
The search engine typically marks celebrations and special days with special logos for its 'Google Doodle', with bespoke graphics and animation. America's birthday would normally be no exception.
But the tribute page which had animated splashes of red, white and blue together with some fireworks sprinkles across the search page suddenly began filling with stories of the horrifying news which was unfolding in the Highland Park area of the city.
