Nick Kyrgios' rollercoaster romance with Chiara Passari made headlines from the moment it began - in June 2020, when the tennis star returned to his hometown of Canberra during the Covid pandemic.

Their on-off relationship lasted more than a year and fluctuated wildly between explosive text message exchanges - invariably shared on social media - to intimate photos shot during lavish tropical island getaways.

One moment he was calling the model, 23, his 'soulmate' while showering her with wine and flowers for Valentine's Day, the next week they'd broken up and Kyrgios, 27, was telling her to enjoy 'living in Canberra the rest of your life'.

The pair seemed to end things for good in October 2021 when police were called to a loud lover's quarrel at The Playford Hotel in Adelaide - where they were in quarantine together after returning from a trip abroad.

They were placed in separate hotel rooms and no charges were laid, however, their relationship woes were far from over.

Police confirmed on Tuesday that Kyrgios will face ACT Magistrate's Court on August 2 in relation to one charge of common assault following an incident in December 2021.

It is understood Kyrgios is accused of grabbing Passari in an alleged incident in December last year. If found guilty, he faces a maximum of up to two years in jail.

Hours after the allegations surfaced, the tennis World No.40 pulled up to practice in Wimbledon ahead of his match against Chile's Cristian Garin on Wednesday for a spot in the Grand Slam's semi-final.

Rumours of Kyrgios' romance with Passari began in June 2020 - following his high-profile split with Russian player, Anna Kalinskaya, in March that year.

The tennis star started posting photos of the brunette in a series of now-deleted Instagram posts, telling fans 'happiness is found' and calling Passari 'my queen'.

'Imagine having a best friend, falling in love with them and going through the fire together... hand in hand. Imagine that. My universe. My $oulmate. Till infinity,' he wrote.

In an interview with Today hosts Karl Stefanovic and Alison Langdon in August 2020, Kyrgios said he was 'incredibly happy' and 'lucky enough to have met her'.

'Moving forward, I'm happy with her,' he said.

The pair shared loved-up photos as they welcomed in 2021 on New Year's Eve with friends in Canberra - looking adoringly into each other's eyes, arms wrapped around the other.

On February 2, Passari uploaded a cryptic Instagram post that read, 'Cheaters always want you to be loyal while they're being unfaithful' - though it is unclear as to whether she was referring to Kyrgios.

Two weeks later, on Valentine's Day, Kyrgios posted a photo of his girlfriend laying on a bed with a bunch of red roses and a bottle of wine.

'Happy Valentine's b,' he wrote, with a series of heart emojis.

'Chiara Passari, I love you.'

Passari later responded: 'There will always be struggles but as long as that magic and those unforgettable experiences are there it's all worth it. Happy belated Valentine's. I love you.'

Little more than a week later, things took another ugly turn.

Passari posted a screenshot of a troubling text message exchange, during which Kyrgios said 'you disgust me' and told her to 'be in Canberra the rest of your life'.

The woman responded, 'I'm sorry you hate yourself,' and they deleted each other on social media.

In March that year, they were seen side-by-side at Sydney Airport while waiting for a flight to Canberra - $5,000 designer suitcases in tow.

The following month, they climbed the Sydney Harbour Bridge together.

In July, they were pictured kissing passionately in a pool during a holiday in the Bahamas - her legs wrapped around the sportsman's waist.

But their doomed romance peaked on October 7, when police were called to an heated argument between the couple at a quarantine hotel room in Adelaide.

Their dispute began when Ms Passari accused Kyrgios of cheating on her, and shared a photo to Instagram purporting to show him in bed with a 'naked girl'.

She then shared a photo of a shirtless and sleeping Kyrgios, adding the caption: 'That girl naked in bed with him isn't me by the way… Hope that clears it up.'

The social media drama resulted in a 'verbal argument' between the pair in their hotel suite, with police eventually forced to separate them into different rooms.
