A Virgin employee has delivered a brutal message to hundreds of travellers, telling them their late-night flight had been cancelled minutes before it was due to take off.

The Virgin staff member took to the intercom at Sydney Airport on Tuesday night to tell the shocked travellers they would have to leave the domestic terminal immediately, advising them to either 'go home' or try and book a hotel room after the 11.30pm flight to Melbourne was cancelled.

British man Matty Gallagher, who travelled to Australia to be with his family after they relocated down under, wasn't able to get a hotel so late at night.

And because he wasn't from Sydney, Mr Gallagher was forced to sleep on a bench at the nearby McDonald's - alongside other passengers from the same flight.

Virgin told Daily Mail Australia that it was dealing with a record number of passengers, with the figures even higher than they were at Easter, when staff shortages and increased demand threw many Australian airports into chaos.

Mr Gallagher described the episode as 'such a horrible experience' and suggested to other travellers 'don't go booking holidays soon'.

'You just need to do that yourself and then claim that money back through us ... I just can’t secure them, I have been on the phone trying to see if I’m able to.'

The Virgin worker said the passengers were entitled to book a hotel room up to $220, and would be able to claim extra travel expenses from the airline, as long as they kept the receipts.

As soon as the angry passengers heard the boarding gate worker admit they would have to sort out a bed for the night themselves, they
