An Australian model has told how a holiday in paradise ended in a terrifying nightmare after she and her friend were robbed three times in one night.

Geena Coulson, 26, from Brisbane, was on a nine-day dream trip to Bali last week when thieves drained her bank account and ripped her phone from her hands.

She was left penniless and distraught - but locals told her she'd need to bribe the police to investigate - or pay off the thieves to get her expensive new iPhone back.

'I thought I was going to a luxury island holiday, not a third world country,' she told Daily Mail Australia.

'It was a nightmare. I felt unsafe the whole time.'

Ms Coulson and her friend were halfway through their first overseas trip since the Covid lockdowns when they enjoyed a night at the local Potato Club last Wednesday.

When the pair left, they took separate moped taxis to their next stop and Ms Coulson's friend was helping the driver navigate using Google Maps on his phone.

But as they drove through the backstreets of Bali, a sneaky thief grabbed the driver's phone from the friend's hand and sped off, sparking a terrifying high speed chase.

'The driver freaked out and he started chasing the guy who stole his phone,' said Ms Coulson.

'He going 100 km/h though the streets and my friend's begging him to  pull over - she was terrified.'

As her friend clung on for dear life, she rang Ms Coulson on her own phone and begged her to come and get her.

When Ms Coulson's driver reached the scene, another thief on a bike appeared, and snatched the Aussie model's phone out of her hand.

'I had no idea what was going on,' she said.

'I have her location on my phone on Facebook and I'm telling my driver where to go.

'And then this other bike he goes past me and just snatches my phone out of my hand and then drives away.

'I was like, "He stole my phone!" but the driver didn't chase him.'

She added: 'I don't know if it was the same person because now I'm in robber country, I guess.'

The sobbing pair finally got back to their room where they spent an hour on hold trying to speak to Ms Coulson's bank.

She feared the thieves would access her internet banking, and when she finally spoke to customer services, she was told her account had been emptied.

Her bank card had already been skimmed and cloned when she used it at an ATM earlier, and the thieves quickly took what they could.

The high tech criminals had drained all the cash in the account - and run up a $250 overdraft - leaving her penniless.

'The ATM was rigged and they just took everything,' she revealed.

'But when I went to the police, I was told I could either get a report for my insurance claim...or I could get them to investigate - but I couldn't get both.

'I thought that was really weird - but then people messaged me to tell me I needed to bribe the cops to get them to do both.

'I thought was crazy. That is the last thing I want to do - I don't want to get arrested for bribing the police and end up in jail.'

The pair attempted becoming detectives themselves the next day, tracing the phone via the Find My Phone app - but had no success.

'We actually caught a taxi to the last known location of the phone, but we couldn't see it anywhere around there,' she said.

'Our taxi driver told us like if we could get in contact with the person that stole my phone, we could bribe them for it back but we couldn't because the phone was off.'

The pair desperately tried to bring their departure date forward so they could flee the Indonesian holiday island earlier than planned but were unable.
