A high-flying real estate boss and Liberal Party prospect has quit over a fake tan race row that has rocked the Property Council of Australia.

The council's Victorian executive director Danni Hunter stood down on Tuesday after allegedly making a racist remark to a co-worker at a gala dinner night on June 23.

Ms Hunter is said to have told a staff member at the function in Crown's Palladium ballroom that she needed more fake tan as she wanted to look 'Indian or Aboriginal'.

The shocked staffer reportedly asked Ms Hunter for an apology but she's alleged to have refused and it was dismissed as a light-hearted remark.

The comment sparked the resignation of the outraged senior colleague days later after the un-named woman made a formal complaint over the incident.

Ms Hunter resigned on Tuesday after having taken a leave of absence when details of the fallout from the council's function appeared in the media last week.

On Wednesday, Ms Hunter refused to discuss the row and referred Daily Mail Australia to the council's media officer who did not respond to an enquiry.

'I don't have anything to add to what's been said so far,' Ms Hunter told Daily Mail Australia.

The council is the nation's peak lobby group representing property developers and builders, and has an ethnically diverse staff in its national headquarters.

Flame-haired and pale-skinned Ms Hunter is said to have turned up at the glittering event with a deeper tan than normal before allegedly making her remark.

'Danni had a tan for the ball and told a staff member that she needed lots more fake tans because she wanted to look Indian or Aboriginal,' a staffer told the Herald Sun.

'That team member asked for an apology but
