A 70-year-old laundromat worker in Brooklyn, New York, was whacked on the head several times by a thief with a hammer as he fearlessly tried to stop him from stealing from the till.

The assault took place inside Aqua Wash Laundromat on East 98th Street on August 4 at 4.55am in the Brownsville neighborhood, according to the New York Police Department (NYPD). 

Footage shared by police shows the unidentified attacker scanning through items in the store while walking past the laundromat’s check-out counter. 

He later returns, holding a black plastic bag and a hammer from the laundromat, and goes behind the counter to steal what seems to be bottles of bleach, according to the store's surveillance cameras.

The elderly laundromat worker then confronts the suspect before both engage in a brawl.
