An Australian activist who claims he was set up after a bomb threat was sent in his name to a Chinese Embassy in London has flown home after being trapped in the UK for weeks. 

Drew Pavlou booked a one-way flight to Brisbane on Saturday afternoon after spending the past four weeks unable to leave the UK.

Mr Pavlou had staged a peaceful protest outside the Chinese Embassy in London when he was arrested by police and detained for 20 hours on July 21.

He was informed by officers they had received reports from the Chinese Embassy he had sent an email threatening to bomb it - an allegation he firmly denies.

Mr Pavlou was released back into the public, but warned to not leave the country while the investigation was ongoing.

His bail conditions were changed on Friday
