A 26-year-old Republican running for Congress in North Carolina said recently that GOP criticism about the United States being a banana republican is 'an insult to Banana Republics' in a reference to the clothing store chain.
Hines also used the metaphor to take a shot at President Joe Biden's mental health, during his Friday appearance on the John Fredericks radio show.
The Donald Trump-endorsed candidate was asked in a now-viral clip from the interview about whether Republicans would make good on their promises to crack down on the Internal Revenue Service and the FBI if they win the Congressional majority in November.
It comes after the FBI executed an unannounced search warrant on Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort last week in an investigation linked to the ex-president's handling of classified documents.
'I mean, we have to. I mean, we’re at a point in our country now where we have a unregulated fourth branch of government that’s targeting middle class Americans on a daily basis. I mean, it’s unbelievable, what we’re seeing,' Hines said.
'A lot of people have likened the situation that’s going on right now is, you know, they say we’re in a Banana Republic. I think that’s an insult to Banana Republics across the country.'
He continued, 'I mean, at least the manager of Banana Republic, unlike our president, knows where he is and why he’s there and what he’s doing.'
'I mean we have a president right now who doesn't know where he is, doesn't know who he is or what time it is.'
Hines' campaign indicated to DailyMail.com that the Capitol Hill hopeful was joking.
