A new hi-tech device hanging over roads across Australia has left many drivers confused - but for anyone that's received a fine for using their phone while driving, the camera is all-too familiar. 

The mobile phone detection cameras, found across NSW, are used to target drivers illegally using their devices and have recently been going viral on social media as furious road users blast the secretive machine.

Though some dismissed the cameras as 'revenue raisers', 'highway robbery' and 'ATM for cops', many welcomed them. 

'People shouldn't have mobile phones in hands or laps when driving. It can cost someone else their lives,' one person wrote on a Facebook group for the St Ives suburb of Sydney.

This was reinforced by another poster who said 'even if the phone is on your lap that's an offence. 

'I wouldn't have believed that until it happened to a friend who had her phone on her skirt and was done.'

Some posters saw the post as chance for a joke, with one saying 'be sure to take a photo of it with your mobile phone as you drive past it'.

Another joked it was a 'vaccine detector'.
