A martial arts instructor has been hailed a hero after he used his own car to stop another vehicle whose driver had collapsed at the wheel while on a busy motorway.

John Barlow, 59, from Middleton, was driving to get a new kitten when he saw a car on the M62 near Leeds moving slowly in the outer lane.

As he drove alongside the Audi A3 he noticed the ‘grey’ looking driver had blood pouring out of his mouth and feared he was ‘dead’.

In an attempt to save the driver, Mr Barlow pulled his Huyendi Santa Fe SUV in front of the other vehicle bringing it to a complete stop.

Mr Barlow tried to get into the car by smashing down the locked car and was helped by a tradesman with a hammer to get access to the stricken middle-aged driver.

He then performed CPR on the man until an off-duty physiotherapist, police officer, doctor took over the situation stabilising the man until paramedics arrived.

The brave man said: ‘When I looked in his car, it was pretty horrific. He looked dead if I’m being honest with you.

‘So I moved forward at the same speed as him and pulled in front, and then I very slowly started slowing down.

‘It was probably the worst thing I’ve ever seen in my life. He was grey, his head was slumped a little bit forward, and he had blood and all kinds of stuff coming out of his mouth and trickling down his chin.

Others drivers stopped at the scene, bringing the four-lane carriageway to a halt, and a physio and an off-duty female police officer took over the first aid until paramedics arrived. An off-duty doctor travelling the other way turned around to help

‘I could see that his lips had gone blue.’

Mr Barlow had been travelling on Saturday in the car with his wife Kirsty and his seven-year-old son on the way to get their new kitten from Pontefract, West Yorkshire.
