In a citywide crisis where residents have repeatedly been warned not to drink the water, Shane Miller grabbed a garden hose and gulped away – and still didn't see a doctor even after he felt like he was experiencing an 'alien virus.'

'I was drinking it right out of the spigot,' the 50-year-old living in Jackson, Mississippi, told DailyMail.com. 'I didn't know there was a boil-water alert. My phone's been out of service.'

That was a week ago and it wasn't until later on that day that he learned about the crisis, after walking into a convenience store to get a fountain drink. He noticed that the machine had been taped off, with an advisory posted about the public health emergency.

'I saw signs blocking the Coca Cola,' he said. 'It was like a new language to me. I was like, this sounds serious.'

Pumps at the main water-treatment plant in the state's capital failed earlier in the week, leaving 150,000 residents without safe running water and prompting the governor to declare a state of emergency.

But Miller noticed none of that.

Unemployed and living on the southern outskirts of the capital in a trailer, he doesn't watch the news and his cell phone is cracked. He admittedly takes drugs and has written about his life in four self-published books, including Hell is Getting Hotter and A View from the Edge.
