A plane with the pilot dead inside is stuck underwater in a Georgia lake, as recovery crews are unable to retrieve the aircraft despite knowing exactly where it is.

According to authorities, the plane happened to crash in the deepest part of Lake Hartwell, on the border with South Carolina, and is now submerged under 120 feet of water in a mass of tangled tree branches.

The sheriff's office said they are reaching out to the victim's family but cannot positively identify the pilot until the body is recovered.

The cause of the crash hasn't been determined, but the pilot was flying 'on an IFR flight plan' according to the National Transportation Safety Board, meaning the pilot was relying on the plane's navigational tools rather than visual cues.

IFR is usually instituted when a pilot is unable to see clearly from the cockpit due to bad weather like fog or rainstorms.

Weather reports in Hartwell, Georgia on the morning of September 10 - the day of the crash - show there were spikes of wind and rain.

A dive team boat is stationed on the lake, positioned over where the plane is submerged as divers work to get the pilot's body out of the plane
