Sunday 18 September 2022 11:32 PM Lidia Thorpe to snub Queen Elizabeth II memorial in Canberra for 'abolish the ... trends now Ms Thorpe has been a vocal critic of the monarchy and is currently pushing for a treaty with First Nations people. During her oath to office in August, Ms Thorpe raised her fist above her head in protest and labelled Queen Elizabeth II a 'colonising queen'. She has also slammed a push by Mr Albanese to host a referendum to introduce an Indigenous Voice to Parliament. Ms Thorpe labelled it a 'waste of money' and time and instead wants a treaty with First Nations. Aboriginal senator Lidia Thorpe has labelled a referendum for an Indigenous Voice to Parliament a 'waste of money' 'The costs involved in a referendum are better spent on what is needed in our communities,' she said. Ms Thorpe has also dismissed the indigenous leaders who will steer the Indigenous Voice to Parliament as 'captain's picks'. Indigenous Australians Minister Linda Burney has launched a working group to push the issue towards a referendum in the next two years. The group included prominent leader Noel Pearson, human rights lawyer Megan Davis, and health advocate Pat Anderson. But Senator Thorpe said they were 'captain's picks' who did not reflect indigenous voices and the focus should instead have been on grassroots leaders and activists. 'I mean, we want to talk about grassroots. I don't see anyone different in the list that I've seen so far, so they haven't gone very far and wide,' she said. 'There's a lot of work to do and grassroots people have been contacting me since the announcement - they're not happy and they need to do better.' Last Thursday, Ms Thorpe launched into a heated tirade on Twitter - following the death of Queen Elizabeth II. In her parliamentary oath of allegiance earlier this year (pictured), Ms Thorpe labelled the Queen a coloniser 'They buried our kids in the sand and kicked off their heads, and you want me to pay my respects?' Ms Thorpe wrote. 'This isn't about an individual, it's about the institution she represents and the genocide that they're responsible for.' A day earlier Ms Thorpe penned an opinion piece for The Guardian in which she said the 'legacy of the crown' for Indigenous Australians was 'education that erases us and prisons that kill us'. 'The 'British empire' declared a war on these shores, against this country's First Nations peoples. This led to massacres. And you want a minute's silence from me?' Ms Thorpe declared. 'Colonial governments are complicit in continuing the crimes against First Nations people because that is the agenda of the coloniser... around the world. To think that people can stand and celebrate that is ignorant and painful.' All rights reserved for this news site (dailymail) and under his responsibility
