Australians are moving back home with their parents in droves to escape ballooning cost of living pressures, save for a house deposit and help family, new research shows. 

A survey of 1,058 households from a range of demographics by Finder revealed that 13 per cent have had a grown up child move back in. If the same figures were applied to the Australian population as a whole, that would be equivalent to 858,000 homes taking back in a grown-up.  

Almost one in three, or 30 per cent, of those returning to the nest said they were doing so because paying rent was too difficult.

Meanwhile, almost as many - at 35 per cent - said buying a house was huge feat amid soaring property prices and they were returning home to save cash for a home deposit.

The top reason was to help with care for children or aged parents, with 36 per cent saying this was why they were moving back with family.
