Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is calling for an additional $290 million to fight drug trafficking as he warned of the growing threat of 'rainbow fentanyl' which could be mistaken for candy by children ahead of Halloween.
The new funding would be used for 61 Overdose Response Strategy teams to help curb fentanyl, specifically the 'rainbow' kind, the New York Democrat said in a press conference.
'This is fentanyl, this is a Sweetart — you tell me the difference,' Schumer said at a press conference Sunday as he held photos of the candy and photos of the deadly drug side by side.
'Simply put, it is not candy,' Schumer said. 'They don't tell the kids it's candy, but they say, 'Oh, this will give you a great high,' and it looks innocent, so the kids are far more likely to take it.'
'Our drug dealers will stop at nothing, and are now giving this evil drug the morbid moniker of 'Rainbow.' It's gross, it's disgusting,' he said.
