The economic crisis has dogged Biden's administration as Democrats look to hang on to the House and the Senate in November's midterm elections. During a White House meeting, Biden singled out 'junk fees' such as bank overdraft charges and and cell phone termination charges for causing economic pain. And he had a special message for gas companies. 'My message is simple…Bring down the prices you're charging at the pump,' he said during a meeting of his White House Competition Council. 'Do it now… Not a month from now. Do it now.' He said that he was tasking his council to come up with ways to encourage competition and reduce fees. In particular, he focused on overdraft fees from banks, termination fees from cell phone companies and airline rebooking fees. Families shouldn’t have to pay these fees,' he said. Republicans have blamed Biden for the surge in prices since pandemic closures eased last year, triggered supply chain congestion. Biden, in turn, has sought to point the finger at private enterprise and examples of price gouging. But he claimed that the U.S. was better placed than many other countries battling rising prices.
