An Australian nurse and former women's AFL player has lost a high-profile challenge against Covid-19 vaccine mandates after a court found it to be 'hypothetical'.

Former Adelaide Crows player Deni Varnhagen led the challenge after losing her nursing job last year because she refused to get jabbed, despite South Australia's Emergency Management Act requiring health care workers be vaccinated.

On Tuesday, Supreme Court Justice Judy Hughes ruled the case was 'hypothetical and lacks utility' after the state removed the emergency declaration earlier this year.

'The impugned administrative acts that are challenged in the primary proceedings are no longer operative in the challenged form,' Justice Hughes said.
