Billionaire Gerry Harvey has claimed that China's system of government is the most efficient way to get things done in Australia before slamming the state of the country's politics and the rise of the teal independents as a 'recipe for disaster'.

The executive chairman of Harvey Norman praised a Chinese-style dictatorship as the most effective form of government.

'If you want to get something done, the best system is the Chinese one,' Mr Harvey said.

'You just do it. You've got a government that's in total control and they don't give a f*** what the people say.'

Mr Harvey made the comments to news.com.au while expressing concerns about the rise of minor parties, especially the teal independents, as a larger number of Australians preferred candidates not from either major party at the 2022 federal election. 

Six Liberal MPs were defeated by the teal independents in the election, with Allegra Spender, Kylea Tink, Monique Ryan, Zoe Daniel, Kate Chaney and Sophie Scamps all winning seats.

Mr Harvey took issue with having too many independents in parliament because he believes the political process will be 'slowed extraordinarily' and nothing will get done.

He added that parliament was now filled with 'big minority groups with a very loud voice and not a lot of numbers behind them'.
