Donald Trump very nearly booted his daughter and son-in-law from their White House adviser roles via Twitter, a new excerpt suggests on Wednesday.
An excerpt from Maggie Haberman's forthcoming book 'Confidence Man: The Making of Donald Trump and The Breaking of America,' which was published in the Washington Post, details how the former president would go out of his way to drive wedges between his famously tumultuous staff.
That included repeated efforts to get then-Chief of Staff John Kelly to fire Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, the report states.
Haberman also claims that, as president, Trump would leave even high-ranking officials like his Pentagon chief floored with suggestions like bombing 'Mexican drug labs' to help stop the flow of illegal drugs through the US's southwestern border.
'He raised it several times, eventually asking a stunned Defense Secretary Mark Esper whether the United States could indeed bomb the labs,' the Post's excerpt reads.
Trump reportedly said the illegal drug crisis would be solved by putting 'lead to target.'
The New York Times journalists' upcoming book also paints a much different picture of the close public relationship the ex-president appeared to share with his relatives-turned-White House advisers.
'In meetings with Kelly and [White House Counsel Don] McGahn, Trump gave instructions to essentially fire the pair,' the book states of Ivanka and Jared.
