Omar Zahed, 39, and his infamous brother Tarek, 41, were both shot in a hail of at least 20 bullets as they left the Bodyfit Gym in Auburn, western Sydney, on May 10. Omar bled out at the scene and died - while his older brother miraculously survived several bullet wounds, including through his eye. Omar has long been thought to have been accidentally caught up in the underworld hit, however, new details of his cooperation with detectives have now been revealed. The NSW Supreme Court on Tuesday lifted a suppression order to a judgment where police described the 39-year-old as an 'increasingly reliable' source. The document, which was on an appeal to Omar's sentences for drugs and firearms offences, said he had tipped off police to uncover guns and explosives. 'The applicant also facilitated police meetings with other persons following which further prohibited weapons and explosives were recovered.' The weapons seized include semi-automatic rifles, military assault rifles and one with a bayonet. Police said had it not been for Omar 'police may not have ever recovered these dangerous items'. 'They regard the applicant as an increasingly reliable source. They state, "during this period the source has not stopped assisting police",' the document said. Omar was re-sentenced to ten years in jail in November, 2018 after disclosing the information, but was released on parole in September, 2020. Tarek was earlier this month charged with the murder of Youssef Assoum, who was stabbed and shot at Bankstown in December 2014. After the shooting, which a police source earlier said the hit on Tarek was considered the 'biggest of the year' in the criminal world, burnt out Audis were found at each location within minutes of the hit taking place. Police had warned the brothers as recently a week before the shooting that their lives were at risk, however their advice went unheeded.
