There are only two genders and children do best with a married mum and dad were what right-wingers were told to proclaim at an event in Sydney over the weekend.

Those attending the CPAC (conservative political action conference) event at Sydney's Darling Harbour on Saturday heard they must stand up for truths that were once 'self-evident'.

North Queensland Liberal National Party Senator Matt Canavan received a rousing round of applause after telling the CPAC audience who the 'truth-tellers' were and how to recognise them.

'It’s very easy to tell who the truth-tellers are,' Senator Canavan said.

'They’ve got an adjective now, they are called "cancelled".

'Anyone’s that "cancelled" you pretty much know they are telling the truth.'

Senator Canavan outlined a set of truths he believed it took 'courage' to state.

'The truth is you cannot run an industrial economy on a power system that is weather-dependent,' he said.

'The truth is billions of people will starve if we turn our back on fossil fuels, billions!'

'The truth is climate change policies are a scam, perpetuated by western corporates and egged on communist and former communist dictators.

'The truth is the Chinese Communist Party has never complied with international laws including trade and climate laws and they have stolen thousands of our manufacturing jobs because they can get away with it.

'The truth is that the most important job in our society is that of a mum and a dad and kids do better when they raised by a mum and a dad who remain married.

'And finally, there are only two genders.'

Senator Canavan said these were things children should be taught.

It was a theme also picked up by former prime minister Tony Abbott, who also spoke at the conference.

'I am obviously completely out of step with the modern world,' Mr Abbott said.

'I don’t like the climate cult, I don’t like the virus hysteria. I can’t understand the gender fluidity push.'

He told a story of door-knocking in his former electorate of Warringah, on Sydney's northern beaches, and being told by a woman she couldn't vote for him because her children opposed his climate change stance.

Mr Abbott said he her asked the woman 'who is the adult?'

'I think we have been remarkably shy of being the adults that we should be,' Mr Abbott said.

The challenge for conservatives, according to Mr Abbott, was to curb government interference in people's lives.

'That means getting regulations down so good people can make the most of their lives without having to answer to officialdom on everything from the colour of their heat reflecting phones to the pronouns they use,' he said.

A small of group of protesters gathered outside the CPAC event accused those attending of being 'fascists', 'anti-queer' and 'transphobes'.

At one stage police had to separate the protesters from a CPAC attendee, who went into their midst along with a camera crew.

Police also blocked the protesters when they made an attempt to storm the Darling Harbour International Convention Centre, where CPAC was held, through a back entrance.
