Three of New York City's most frequented and trendy restaurants have been stripped of their only Michelin stars as part of an uncharacteristically aggressive annual redistribution of stars.

Michelin's 2022 star rankings for New York were announced on Thursday evening at an event in Hudson Yards in Manhattan.

Carbone, Peter Luger Steakhouse and Marea are three New York restaurants that have experienced a falling from grace and been left without recognition from the French tire manufacturer and publisher of influential restaurant guides.

Another restaurant that lost its star included ZZ's Clam Bar, with no vegetarian options.

In contrast Dirt Candy was a vegetarian restaurant that acquired its first Michelin star.

The 17 restaurants that were granted a first star have almost double the number of vegetarian main dishes than the nine eateries that lost theirs.

On average the number of vegetarian mains offered in the restaurants that lost their only star was 1.4 while in those that gained a first star it was 2.3.

South Indian restaurant Semma also gained a star. Unlike any restaurant to have lost its star, Semma offers a wide range of vegetarian dishes.

One of its owners Roni Mazumdar told Bloomberg he believes the gesture will support the next-generation of chefs to express themselves through food more connected to their heritage.

Overall the number of restaurants with at least one star is up to 73 from 68 last year.

'New York’s culinary landscape is definitely back on its feet, growing bigger and bigger,' said Michelin Guides director Gwendal Poullennec during the event.

Carbone is a hangout in Greenwich Village that has been favored by celebrities and high-status individuals since it opened in 2013.

It was awarded its first Michelin star the same year it opened.

Five restaurants in NYC retained their three Michelin stars

The five restaurants in NYC that had three stars in 2021 have all retained them in 2022. They are:

1. Masa

2. Le Bernardin

3. Per Se

4. Chef's Table at Brooklyn Fare

5. Eleven Madison Park

The restaurant was founded by chefs Mario Carbone and Rich Torrisi and is famous for its spicy rigatoni and interior décor that might have resembled the set of Goodfellas.

Many restaurants in NYC were forced to re-configure during the pandemic. That could be what played into the demise of Carbone. Food critic Pete Wells of the New York Times said in a review in August that 'most people who’ve been there since it [re]opened in May have eaten at wobbly patio tables outdoors.'

Marea, another restaurant to have lost its star, is a seafood restaurant just south of Central Park.

It is run by the Altamarea Group which is owned by former Wall Street executive Ahmass Fakahany, who describes the restaurant as being for people who 'don’t chase luxury but live it'.

Fakahany's Altamarea Group lost another star at its restaurant Ai Fiori.

Marea has suffered a fairly consistent loss of prestige in the past couple of years. Although the restaurant was awarded a second Michelin star in 2010, it lost that a decade later in 2020. Now its down to zero.

Before the losses, in 2017 Anthony
