Human remains have been discovered in Okmulgee, Oklahoma in a river Friday afternoon, local news outlets report.

According to News On 6, the families of four local men who have been missing have been informed.

At this time, police have not confirmed that the remains are those of the missing men, however.

News Channel 8 in Tulsa streamed a press conference with the Okmulgee Police Department Chief Joe Prentice Friday in which he confirmed 'multiple human remains' were found.

Prentice said Friday he's unsure if the remains are connected to a group of men who recently went missing nearby.

'Currently, we have more questions than answers,' Prentice said.

The Chief also said that it could take some time to identify the remains.

'If it turns out that these four missing men are the remains in the river, then the focus of our investigation will shift from finding them to what happened to them,' Prentice stated.

'If it is determined that it is not them, then we will have two separate investigations.

No other information was immediately available.

DailyMail.com reached out to law enforcement officials for comment but did not immediately hear back.

Family members of the four missing Oklahoma bicyclists who vanished after visiting a junkyard have begun to lose hope as the search goes on.

Mark Chastain, 32, his brother Billy, 30, Mike Sparks, 32, and Alex Stevens, 29, left their homes in Okmulgee on Sunday at 8 p.m. and have not been seen since.

The group was reported missing Monday and a witness claimed to have seen them walking along a street at 2 a.m. on Tuesday but police have not confirmed the sighting.

Billy Chastain's girlfriend, Megan Gordan, told News 6 that the families are beginning to see their hopes fade after the search party looked around a nature preserve near Okmulgee Thursday.

She said: 'It's getting hopeless, I still have hope, but it's getting hopeless. That's why I put together this search. Because I want to find him. I want to find all of them. I want them, at this point whether they're dead or alive I want to find them.'

Police in Okmulgee said they had searched the preserve a day early and found nothing.
