House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy said Sunday that he had spoken with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in the hours after her husband Paul was violently assaulted by an intruder who broke into their San Francisco home.

McCarthy told Fox News' Sunday Morning Futures that he exchanged text messages with the Democratic leader on Friday, after the incident occurred overnight.

The attacker, 42-year-old David DePape, apparently repeated 'Where's Nancy?' after he illegally entered the property, suggesting he was looking for the speaker herself - who was not at home. DailyMail.com previously reported alarming details on DePape's life before the attack.

McCarthy, who like Pelosi is part of California's Congressional delegation, condemned the violence and called DePape 'deranged.'

It comes after progressive Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez publicly blasted McCarthy for not speaking out against the violent attack on Saturday morning.

'Let me perfectly clear - violence or threat of violence has no place in our society,' the Republican leader said on Sunday.

'What happened to Paul Pelosi is wrong. Having heard it, I reached out and called the Speaker. She was on a plane back for her husband, though, so we were able to communicate by text.'

He said Pelosi told him her husband's surgery for a skull fracture and arm injuries 'went well.'

The intruder had attacked Paul Pelosi with a hammer after police arrived at the scene.

'I wanted to convey that our thoughts and prayers were with her and her family, with Paul, and we hope him- for him, a speedy recovery, and that we're able to stop this crime across our country,' McCarthy said.

'Of course, this person seems deranged.'

His Sunday show comments are the first public statements McCarthy has made on the incident, though his spokesman Mark Bednar told Voice of America on Friday
