A California man in his 40s has been arrested after police found him hiding in a woman's closet with duct tape, a folding knife and a glove in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Benicia police responded to a call at 2.45am when a woman reported hearing noises coming from the bedroom of her home in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Police said in a post on Facebook the woman stayed on the phone and waited outside her home until officers arrived at the scene.

Timothy Allen Allison, 41, was arrested after a 'brief struggle' and booked into the Solano County Jail.

Allison had been found by police inside a closet in possession of the items while his car was later found in the area.
