Wednesday 2 November 2022 08:01 AM Melbourne Cup 2022: Best and worst photos from the iconic race day as punters ... trends now Scenes at the Melbourne Cup didn't disappoint this year with glamorous attendees partying well into the early hours of Wednesday morning in celebration of the race that stops a nation. The biggest event on Australia's racing calendar attracted a lively crowd who lived it up trackside with a drink and a punt before kicking on at post-race festivities in Sydney, Melbourne, and across the country. Here is a wrap-up of some of the greatest moments from the 2022 Melbourne Cup - some of the best (and worst) photos you won't be forgetting until the next iconic race day rolls around. The man didn't seem to care he had muddied his suit trousers - and lost his shirt at some point during the wild celebrations A shirtless punter was seen clowning around on the turf at Flemington Racecourse as an amused crowd cheered him on The rain in Melbourne created an excellent opportunity for one punter to lose his shirt and slide across the damp turf The female reveller nearly suffered a wardrobe malfunction as she fixed the high split on the side of her daring green dress However, not everybody's evening ended to plan, with one shoeless woman left slumped face-down on the pavement before she was hauled to her feet by another Melbourne Cup attendee Punters in Melbourne and Sydney made sure to keep the good times rolling as celebrations started to wind-down at Flemington and Randwick - with one brazen attendee choosing to lose his shirt entirely. A crowd of confused revellers formed around the young man as he ditched his dress shirt and made the ill-advised decision to turn the damp turf into his personal slip-and-slide during a hail storm. Photos show the man running at speed before hitting the ground hard and sliding to the amusement of his mates, who cheered the jokester on while others recorded the gaff on their phones. One woman was also pictured making her friends laugh as they attempted to depart race celebrations in Sydney, as she clung to a male companion and nearly sent him toppling into a nearby hedge. The pair smooched outside the track as celebrations across Sydney continued in lieu of the iconic race that stops a nation Revellers were in high spirits in Sydney as one race-goer narrowly avoided being pushed into a hedge by his female companion before she planted a kiss on another man in a dark suit The woman grabbed the face of her male companion as they continued festivities outside Sydney's Randwick Racecourse Excited punters enjoyed the historic day as a rainbow formed at Flemington as the races wrapped up and the party continued The well-dressed reveller almost suffered a wardrobe malfunction as she steadied herself and planted a kiss on another man as the group finally made their way to post-race festivities. Festivities were far from over as the clock struck midnight on Tuesday as women skolled beers on the street while other loved-up couples took the opportunity to steal a romantic smooch under the stars. However, not everybody's evening ended to plan, with one shoeless woman left slumped face-down on the pavement before she was hauled to her feet by another Melbourne Cup attendee. One smitten couple took the opportunity to share a kiss under the stars after getting glammed-up for the iconic race day Another attendee was on hand to help the woman up from the pavement after she slumped shoeless on the city footpath A group of men in Sydney got some fresh air after attending race day festivities earlier in the day Revellers in Melbourne shivered through the coldest Cup Day since 1995 with many forced to ruin their expensive outfits with the daggy addition of a jacket, poncho or umbrella. One woman in a bright pink raincoat took a well-deserved perch on her friend's lap while another man appeared to muddy the back of his beige jacket after perhaps falling, or tumbling on to the wet grass. Those who made it to the end of race day in Melbourne were rewarded with a stunning rainbow that stretched over the entire track - with punters naturally taking it as a sign to have a dance on the turf. Women kicked off their heels as men joined a conga line and showed off their fancy footwork in unison. Another race-goer decided to put on a show for her fellow punters as she danced to the sounds of a brass trio in Melbourne Winning jockey Mark Zahra on horse Gold Tripp celebrates with the crowd after taking out the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday Earlier in the day, punters in Melbourne didn't let the wet and wild weather ruin their fun, as icy winds and rain pounded the city on the iconic race day and forced some racegoers to hide under ponchos and umbrellas However, other over-excited punters took the weather event as a chance to wrestle on the turf as unimpressed attendees watched from inside the Birdcage. Punters certainly had their fun beside the track, with huge piles of rubbish including copious cans and bottles left for officials to clean up as attendees continued celebrations elsewhere. Glamorous revellers who were still still standing by the early hours were seen puffing on vapes and texting on their phones as they finally returned home after attending Australia's biggest racing event. One punter was forced to remove his jacket after he muddied the back of it after perhaps falling onto the wet grass Crowds depart the Melbourne Cup after a wild day of weather that saw showers and hail fall on Flemington Others were seen skolling beers and puffing on vapes in pubs and bars in Sydney and Melbourne after watching the race The wild scenes played out as Gold Trip ridden by jockey Mark Zahra stormed to victory, with Emissary coming in second and High Emocean placing third from last in an incredible effort on the track. The jockey was seen giving the champion horse his all in the last 300m of the thrilling race, overtaking favourite Deauville Legend and ending with an X-rated spray at his rival jockeys as he crossed the line. Zahra admitted he wanted the other jockeys to just 'p*** off' and that the feeling of winning on Gold Trip was surreal and made him feel like he was 'going to cry'. 'He's a horse that when you go for it, you really want to go for it,' the jockey said in a post-race interview. 'It's just surreal, absolutely surreal. I was very doubtful he'd run 3200m.' As the afternoon grew to evening another man simply lay on his back on the ground - seemingly exhausted from the long day A woman was seen giving her friend wearing a bright pink raincoat a perch after a long day of festivities on Tuesday Punters slowly started to file out of Flemington Racecourse leaving cans, food wrappers and empty wine bottles behind Another race-goer planted a smooch on a woman's lips as they partied the night away after attending race day celebrations He also shared some fellow jockeys, saying he had hoped they just 'p*** off' during the nerve-wracking final stages down the stretch. '[I was thinking] just p*** off, no one come near me,' he said. 'The last 50m I was thinking I'm going to win this. It just went forever the last bit. And I still can't believe it. Melbourne Cup, it's unbelievable.' It was redemption for Zahra who was forced to sit back and watch his ride Verry Elleegant win the 2021 Melbourne Cup while he sat out after being suspended for breaches of Covid regulations. Revellers in Melbourne clutched purses, refreshments and umbrellas after the city was hit with downpours on Tuesday Two punters fooled around and wrestled on the wet grass at Flemington as amused racegoers watched on from inside 'This time last year I was watching Verry Elleegant win and getting told off for drinking too much. To come a full year and have redemption on a horse like this with good mates of mine.. it's just an unbelievable feeling,' he said. Interpretation was the only horse who didn't finished the race, however it's understood the horse is okay. Earlier in the day, officials were on high alert after vandals broke onto the track at Flemington and poured an 'oily' substance on the track - potentially endangering the horses and jockeys. Women in bright floral minidresses and statement headbands posed underneath a rainbow as wild celebrations continued One reveller in a yellow dress and blue heels and headbands had a dance under the rainbow as celebrations continued Two glamorous revellers walked in tandem across Sydney's city streets as celebrations winded down after a long day Victoria Police said 'unknown offenders have broken into a racing facility in Flemington and poured an unknown substance over a portion of the track about 6am'. The self-identified problem gambler shared a statement claiming they 'pumped 1,000 litres of an oily substance onto Flemington Racecourse' to protest against the Melbourne Cup. Officials from the Victoria Racing Club said cleaning had been undertaken at the 1500metre mark but that the track was safe and that the race would go ahead.
