Your rideshare trip is about to get more expensive as the NSW government announces a price hike to its passenger service levy to help taxis bail out of the industry.
Taxi licence holders will now be compensated as much as $150,000 for their number plates in Sydney but it comes at a cost, with the service levy jumping from $1 to $1.20 for every trip.
The price hike will stick around until 2030 and is expected to net an extra $260million for the ailing taxi industry.
The offer, announced by the NSW government, to deregulate point-to-point transport services, like taxis and Uber, will be fully funded by the increased service levy.
Drivers in other areas of the state will be offered between $85,000 and $195,000, depending on where they live.
All taxi and Uber customers will pay a $1.20 levy on every trip to fund compensation for NSW taxi licence plate holders
