An alleged killer accused of beating aspiring lawyer Zara Aleena to death as she walked home from a night out with friends has been struck down with Covid and did not attend court today.

Jordan McSweeney, 29, is charged with murdering 35-year-old Zara Aleena in Cranbrook Road, Ilford, east London, in the early hours of Sunday June 26.

McSweeney is alleged to have tried to rape Ms Aleena, also robbing her of her handbag, mobile phone and house keys.

A post-mortem found that Zara Aleena, who had recently started work at the Royal Courts of Justice, died from blunt force trauma injury and neck compression

He was due to enter pleas today for murder, robbery and attempted rape but did not attend court due to his illness.

Prosecutor Oliver Glasgow said: 'He has tested positive for Covid.

'He is in isolation and cannot be brought to a video link to join us by CVP.'

Mrs Justice Cheema-Grubb adjourned the hearing to next Wednesday 16 November.

At a previous hearing, Mr Glasgow said: 'The defendant has been charged in connection with the violent death of Zara who was attacked in the early hours of the morning of 26 June.
