Former President Donald Trump teased spaceflight to Mars and a 'defense shield' over America in the more forward-looking parts of his 2024 presidential announcement speech. 

'We will expand the frontiers of human knowledge and will extend the horizons of human achievement,' Trump said Tuesday night at Mar-a-Lago. 'And we will plant our beautiful American flag very soon on the surface of Mars,' the ex-president pledged. 

Trump also gave his speech a sci-fi edge by saying the U.S. needed shields.  

'To protect our people from the unthinkable threat of nuclear weapons and hypersonic missiles, the United States must also build a state-of-the art next generation missile defense shield - we need it,' he said. 'The power of these missiles, and the power of a word I refuse to say - nuclear - we have to have it.'

Trump said that the United States actually had the technology to build such a session.

'And we're going to build it,' he said, under his second watch. 

Trump gathered his family and the MAGA faithful in Mar-a-Lago's grand ballroom to announce his 2024 effort. 

The former president ignored Republican critics and those who blamed him for the GOP's disappointing midterms to go full steam on stating his intent to be back in the Oval Office to 'drain the swamp' with the country 'being destroyed before our very lives'. 

'In order to make America great and glorious again, I am today announcing my candidacy for president of the United States,' he confirmed to huge cheers before laying into the FBI raid, the 'fake' dossier', the 'deep state' and lobbyists.
