Tesco is the latest supermarket to be hit by egg shortages, with much of its range said to be out of stock.

A snapshot survey of the chain's website found that 18 out of 24 fresh egg lines were listed as unavailable in parts of London.

A similar pattern was seen in other areas of the country.

It comes after disruptions in supply caused by bird flu and spiralling costs led Asda and Lidl to start imposing rationing on the number of eggs customers can buy. Others are expected to follow suit.

Among the products listed as 'out of stock' at Tesco were its packs of 12 large free range eggs, boxes of 15 eggs, and Tesco Finest six free range chestnut maran eggs.

Big brands were also listed as out of stock, including some from the Happy Egg and Big & Fresh companies.

Sources at Britain's biggest supermarket stressed they do not 'currently' have buying limits in place. However, they did not rule them out in future.
