Former OJ Simpson murder case detective Mark Fuhrman has laid out the forensic details police in Moscow, Idaho, will be poring over to solve the killing of four students earlier this month.

The ex-LAPD detective, who worked on the murder investigation of Nicole Simpson in 1994, now lives in Idaho and is lending a hand in the gruesome quadruple stabbing case.

In an interview with DailyMail.com, Fuhrman, 70, described the forensic clues investigators will be picking out from the blood-stained crime scene including blood spray, saliva and fibers – and zeroed in on two terrifying leads.

The veteran cop revealed police have now spoken to students who claim one of the victims, Kaylee Goncalves, complained of a 'stalker' in the weeks before her killing.

And he said detectives will also be urgently chasing up the disturbing killings of animals nearby, including a pet dog three miles from the crime scene that was skinned and 'filleted' by a human assailant.

University of Idaho students Kaylee Goncalves, 21, Madison Mogen, 21, Xana Kernodle, 20, and Ethan Chapin, 20, were stabbed to death on November 13

Moscow residents Pam and Jim Colbert told DailyMail.com on Sunday that they found their adorable mini Australian Shepherd, Buddy, had been butchered on October 21, just three weeks before the murders.

Jim also found a mutilated rabbit with its scalp and ears sheared off close to his home shortly before Buddy's death.

'Is this the act of somebody disturbed? Of course it is,' Fuhrman said. '[Law enforcement] are looking at this. Hopefully they come up with somebody that they can at least talk to, that gives him some idea that we're on the right track.'

Fuhrman said that one way a suspect could be identified is from any DNA they left at the crime scene, including skin under the fingernails of their victims.

Xana Kernodle's wounds suggest she may have tried to fight back during the attack, according to her father Jeffrey.

'The forensics involved with this scene is extensive,' Fuhrman said. 'You have four students. They just were at a bar, at a party or in close contact with people. You can pick up fibers, you can pick up contact DNA.

'Two of the victims supposedly fought back. That's not confirmed by law enforcement, but there were defensive wounds. So it's obvious that at a certain point with at least two victims, the suspect had to control and stab, so he had to use one hand to control.

'A defensive wound or evidence of somebody putting up a fight would be broken nails, scratches, skin under the fingernails,' he added. 'We don't know if any of that was exhibited in the autopsies in the investigation.'

Fuhrman described how recreating the attack could help pinpoint clues, but also explained why the attacker was able to kill all four and no one reported hearing screams.

'You try to recreate in your head what the victims were probably going through at that point,' he said.

'If you sleep well at all – and all of these kids no doubt slept like logs – you're woken up by somebody stabbing you. I'm not sure you completely wake up until the second or third stab.

'I kind of wonder if most of it's not already over at that point.'

'Only the detectives on the case know how this actually looked when they got to the scene,' Fuhrman said.

'But you have to visualize that it's
