Derbyshire-born Mr Clowes was a key member of the editorial team which oversaw the Mail's transformation from broadsheet to compact newspaper in 1971. After learning his trade on local papers in Stockport – where he met his wife Marion – and Lancashire, he joined the Mail's Manchester office in 1952 and was editorial director there at the time of his retirement in 1987. The keen fly-fisherman and artist later wrote for magazines about the English countryside and penned books and walking guides on the Peak District. He is survived by a daughter, Hazel.
