Messages expressing shock and heartbreak have been left at the scene of a fatal crash where a young man was killed after a police officer who later tested positive for a drugs test pursued him.

The police officer was arrested after the crash, which happened in Aylestone Road, Leicester, in the early hours of yesterday.

People living near the scene said today that they had been awoken by the sound of a 'loud bang' when a black BMW, which was being pursued by police, hit a tree.

A police car was in pursuit of the vehicle, but a short time later the BMW collided with a tree close to the junction of Aylestone Road and Richmond Avenue.

The driver of the BMW, a man in his 20s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A passenger in the car, also a man his 20s, was taken to hospital and has since been discharged, said Leicestershire Police.

The car left the road after it had failing to stop shortly before 4am, according to police.

The officer was arrested on suspicion of being unfit to drive after a roadside drugs test.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) will now lead an investigation into the incident.
