There is concern about a new Covid outbreak on board a cruise ship headed for Melbourne as the boat was prevented from docking at another port due to high community transmission in the area.

The Grand Princess, which is part of Princess Cruises, did not dock at the port of Newcastle, north of Sydney, after a discussion with Hunter New England Health.

It is understood the ship - which has an unspecified amount of Covid cases on board - will dock in Melbourne on Thursday.

A Port of Newcastle spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia it did not make the decision to deny access to the cruise ship. Instead, it was a joint decision made by local NSW Department of Health authorities and Princess Cruises.
