Keir Starmer today denied that rejoining the EU single market would boost the economy as he tried to quash rumours Labour wants to restore ties with Brussels.
The party leader said there was 'no case' for a Swiss-style arrangement or resuming full membership of the bloc.
But he insisted the current trade deal is 'not very good' and any government he headed would try to make improvements.
Senior Labour figures including London mayor Sadiq Khan have endorsed returning to the single market, and Sir Keir himself was a strong Remain supporter before Boris Johnson's 2019 election landslide.
In a round of interviews as he launched a democracy and devolution report this morning, Sir Keir acknowledged that while he did not back Brexit he recognised the public's desire to 'take back control'.
