Trump now tries to walk back call for the Constitution to be 'terminated' trends now

Donald Trump on Monday walked back his demand to 'terminate' the US Constitution - but insists he should still be declared the 'rightful winner' of the 2020 election.

The former president sought to clarify his comments via Truth Social after posting to his platform that he wanted the 'termination' of the Constitution with respect to its electoral laws.

It appeared to come in response to an Elon Musk-promoted report dubbed the 'Twitter files.' It showed Twitter workers' correspondence on censorship of the New York Post's story about Hunter Biden's laptop, under the site's 'hacked materials' policy.

Trump and his allies have hailed it as conclusive evidence of election tampering, claiming Twitter suppressed the story in order to help now-President Joe Biden.

He suggested Monday that the 2020 election was 'irrefutably fraudulent' and said 'at minimum' the results should be nullified and the race held again.

'The Fake News is actually trying to convince the American People that I said I wanted to “terminate” the Constitution. This is simply more DISINFORMATION & LIES, just like RUSSIA, RUSSIA, RUSSIA, and all of their other HOAXES & SCAMS,' the ex-president wrote on Truth Social.

'What I said was that when there is “MASSIVE & WIDESPREAD FRAUD & DECEPTION,” as has been irrefutably proven in the 2020 Presidential Election, steps must be immediately taken to RIGHT THE WRONG.'

Trump's comments over the weekend earned bipartisan ire, even eliciting a scathing rebuke from the White House.

In the second of three posts, he wrote in all capital letters: 'Simply put, if an election is irrefutably fraudulent, it should go to the rightful winner or, at a minimum, be redone. Where open and blatant fraud is involved, there should be no time limit for change!'

'We want people who “legitimately” won the election to lead our country, not people who had to cheat in order to win!!!' Trump finished.

Just before 8am on Saturday morning, Trump took to Truth Social to assert that Musk's exposé, published by journalist Matt Taibbi, proved 2020 was 'fraudulent' and called to strip current election laws from the US Constitution.

'So, with the revelation of MASSIVE & WIDESPREAD FRAUD & DECEPTION in working closely with Big Tech Companies, the DNC, & the Democrat Party, do you throw the Presidential Election Results of 2020 OUT and declare the RIGHTFUL WINNER, or do you have a NEW ELECTION?' the ex-president fumed.

'A Massive Fraud of this type and magnitude allows for the termination of all rules, regulations, and articles, even those found in the Constitution. Our great “Founders” did not want, and would not condone, False & Fraudulent Elections.'

Now he's backpedaling amid a flurry of condemnation from fellow Republicans.

Asked about Trump's 'termination' comments by CNN, the No. 2 Senate Republican John Thune said he 'couldn't disagree more.'

He said the Constitution 'is the principle, the bedrock of our of our country.'

'Anyone who desires to lead our country must commit to protecting the Constitution,' GOP Sen. Mike Rounds said in a statement. 'They should not threaten to terminate it.'

He also pointed out that there was 'no evidence of widespread voter fraud' in 2020.

President Joe Biden's White House condemned Trump on Saturday for the furious response to Elon Musk's 'Twitter files'

On Sunday, the top Republican on the House Intelligence Committee said on Sunday that he 'absolutely' disavows Trump's calls and suggested the explosive comments could have a negative impact on his 2024 presidential campaign.

The former president made the explosive statement in the early hours of Saturday after Elon Musk claimed to reveal proof that Twitter - which he recently acquired for $44 billion - worked in tandem with Democrats to tip the scales in the 2020 election.

It was centered around correspondences mainly between top employees at Twitter about the site's suppression of the infamous New York Post story about Hunter Biden's laptop that was published in October 2020.
