A local council's dismal attempt at spreading some festive cheer hasn't ended the way it hoped after locals roasted its Christmas tree as 'the worst in history'.

Families and community members turned out by the hundreds to see Port Macquarie Hastings Council, on NSW's Central Coast, light up its Christmas tree last Friday.

Locals were forced to wait until midnight to see the lights be turned on at the council's annual Christmas Fair - but the long-anticipated reveal was instead met with plenty of disappointed sighs.

Families expecting a glowing symbol of Christmas cheer were instead treated to a sight of Christmas gloom with sad looking fairy light strings barely clinging onto the huge pine tree's branches. 

Port Macquarie Hastings Council took the disappointment in its stride, mocking its own tree with an 'Instagram vs Reality' meme on Facebook.
