Daniel Banete, 30, Lillington Road, Coventry, was jailed for three years and ordered to pay £190 victim surcharge. Banete took out four life insurance policies just a week after his brother died each worth between £100,000 and £150,000 from July, 16, to July, 21, 2020, His brother passed away in hospital from Covid-19 on July, 8, 2020 in Romania. Daniel Banete, 30, Coventry, tried to cash out on four life insurance policies worth £520,000 by lying about the day his dead brother died He gave fake death certificates to the insurance companies with different dates of death between November 2020 to January 2021- this is more than four months after his death. Benete pleaded guilty to eight charges of fraud by false representation at an earlier hearing. At Warwick Crown Court yesterday Tuesday, December, 6, he was jailed for three years and ordered to pay a £190 victim surcharge. Banete filed two claims worth £150,000 each, another claim worth £120,000 and one other worth £100,00 totaling up to a £520,000 cash out. Banete tried to claim hundreds of thousands of pounds in settlements but after he tried to file a claim with Aviva his fraudulent activity was revealed. An Aviva employee, who was Romanian, checked with the hospital after Benete filed a claim. The hospital in Romania confirmed the correct date of death which was Wednesday, July, 8. At Warwick Crown Court yesterday Tuesday, December, 6, Benete was jailed for three years and ordered to pay a £190 victim surcharge The insurer was also able to give an IP address where the policy was taken out and this revealed it was taken out by Banete at his home in Coventry, West Midlands. Claims philosophy manager at Aviva, Jacqueline Kerwood said: 'This sentencing makes the point that insurance fraud is a crime and if you commit insurance fraud, it is likely you will be caught and prosecuted.' During a raid at Banete's house, police found policy documents detailing the life insurance policies for the four insurance companies. Officers also found a file of fake death certificates that showed a date of death as November 10, 2020. It was these documents that were sent to the insurers when the claims were made. Police also found a folder containing Banete's brother's real birth, marriage and death certificates. Banete was arrested and during his interview with detectives he answered 'no comment' to all their questions. Detective Constable Ian Cambridge, from the City of London Police's Insurance Fraud Enforcement Department (IFED), said after the sentencing: 'Banete took out these policies after his brother died with the cynical intention of making financial gain for himself. 'He altered official documents to intentionally deceive the insurers and the overwhelming evidence against him shows that he knew exactly what he was doing.'
