Confronting footage has emerged of police involved in a violent altercation with an injured man in a busy street before spilling into a resident's front yard in front of passing motorists.

NSW Police have defended the actions of motorcycle patrol officers and use of batons during the dramatic arrest in broad daylight in Chester Hill in Sydney's south-west on Tuesday.

Police allege the bald and bearded man struck the helmet of an officer and have determined the tactical options used were 'necessary' after reviewing the incident on bodycam vision.

The man, 39, remains in hospital under police guard after he sustained a laceration to his head and a suspected broken arm during the altercation after he was pulled over by police during a vehicle stop.

He has since been charged with a string of offences, including assaulting police.

The TikTok video begins with the man and an officer wearing a helmet pushing and trading blows on the footpath before the officer pulls out his baton and begins striking.
