A high school senior from New York drowned the day before her 18th birthday during a special mother-daughter trip to Florida when she got caught in a strong current and swept out to sea.

Danielle Marceline, 17, was swimming in the ocean near Cocoa Beach - located south of Cape Canaveral - on Saturday around 1pm in 'rough surf' when she was overcome by a strong current.

Marceline was swimming with her best friend Mary Doyle at the time. Doyle, described as her 'other half,' survived the horrifying ordeal, but lifeguards could not reach Marceline and her body was discovered washed up on the beach the next day.

The young woman's body was found by a couple walking along the beach, Daily Voice reported.
