A prominent Labour MP has spoken out against Sir Keir Starmer’s controversial plan to charge VAT on private school fees, saying he is not ‘convinced by the numbers’.

Under the proposals, independent schools would lose their charitable status – forcing them to pay VAT – while facing a £150million rise in business rates. Labour said it wanted to use the money to fund better state education.
